Welcome to the Biophysics Core Facility!

We have a wide range of instrumentation and expertise to assist you in characterizing your molecule of interest.  From absolute properties to kinetic studies, we provide the tools, training, and assistance for quantitative analysis of macromolecules and their interactions.  Please click on the instrument links in the fee schedule below for more information about our equipment.

Our hours vary, but we are generally open from 9:30a until 6p on weekdays.  We do everything possible to ensure that all registered and trained users have after-hours access.

Other Services

The Biophysics Core Facility offers complete analytical ultracentrifugation service and assistance via the UIC Center for Structural Biology's Beckman Optima XL-I.  A 3-cell run, including cell assembly, experimental design, and instrument operation, costs $675.  Data analysis costs $200 per cell.

For quick absorbance measurements, we maintain a NanoDrop ND-1000 for free use in GCIS W110, a few doors down from our main laboratory.


Funding

Rates are calculated based on the operating cost of the facility, taking into account projected usage and funding from the Biological Sciences Division, the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, and other sources. Our goal is to ensure that income from user fees does not exceed that needed to perpetuate the service on a self-sustaining basis.
